My Japanese Moment

As I approached my 50th year one of my wishes was to travel to Japan to experience the Cherry Blossom trees in full bloom.

I departed for Tokyo in April during the height of Cherry Blossom season. The trip was so well planned that we took our flight precisely the night before the highest blossoming day. The hotel was booked right next door to Ueno Park in central Tokyo. I went to the most popular park in Tokyo to marvel at the delicate pink blossoms decorating the trees fancifully. The Japanese take this very seriously and so does the rest of the world with so many foreign visitors enjoying their “moment” of blossom. I am sure over 1001 photographs of the blossoming trees in that park must have been taken. people of all ages and backgrounds stare in awe at the blossoms, like watching angles flying in the sky spreading magical whispers in pink.  Many were seated in the parks using corrugated cards as mat, stacks and stacks of these reusable cards most probably provided by the local authority as a gesture of encouragement for the visitors and locals alike to take seat and relax. The cardboard mats were large enough for 2 persons to squeeze their bums on and just thick enough so the cold from the concrete ground could not penetrate. Often it is customary to lunch in the parks under the cherry blossom tree, also afternoon tea and even dinner where the cherry trees are lit up in complimentary pink lighting. Close by a mobile noodle and hot bun bar with refreshments so people can snack while admiring the beauty under a pink canopy of blossoms.

My Japanese moment was in a park when a group of school girls came towards me. I tried to politely avoid my urge to take their picture; however, I did not realize they wanted to photograph me! And I thought, why not, it’s a beautiful day! Without any further conversation I was wrapped up in arms by these wonderful school girls taking selfies with me in smack dab in the middle.  What a spontaneous moment and what a shot!

…its my moment!
